Stress Fracture

Stress fractures are tiny cracks in a bone, usually found in the weight bearing bones of the foot or lower leg. They can be caused by injury or repetitive force and overuse, such as running long distances or jumping or a sudden increase in activity. The most common symptom is pain, which can develop gradually and becomes worse with any weight bearing activity. You can also experience swelling on the foot or ankle, tender to touch the fracture site, possible bruising and pain may subside when resting.

 How To Help At Home

  • Rest the foot to allow fracture to heal (can take 6-8 weeks depending on severity of fracture).
  • Ice to ease swelling.
  • Avoid activities that put stress on the area of the fracture.
