Bunions

Bunions are boney, hard, often painful lumps that form on the side of your feet. Bunions happen when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. Sometimes they can cause your big toe to point towards your other toes. The skin over the bunion may be swelling, sore and red in colour. They’re often a genetic trait and they can be quite painful and can cause mobility issues. They can also be caused by wearing poorly fitting shoes that force the toes into an unnatural position. Surgery is the only way to get rid of them but we do offer services to help with making them more comfortable.

What can we do?

  • Biomechanical assessment (looking at the structure, alignment, strengths and weaknesses).
  • Prescribe orthotics if needed to provide more stability around the joint, which can help with pain free walking.
  • Make devices for the toes.
  • Give footwear advice.

How to ease them

  • Wearing comfortable shoes and insoles can reduce the pain.
  • Surgery is the only way to remove them and if they’re particularly painful your podiatrist may recommend surgery.
